CAT FACTS! 10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT CATS

cats , May 1, 2018

Cats, also known as one of the most popular pets on the planet, are going viral on the internet at least once a day, and there are many reasons why almost everybody loves cats. Cat lovers love to love their cats and just about any other cat they come into contact with, but what may cat fanatics not know about their favourite furry friends?

THEY SPEND ALMOST HALF THEIR ENTIRE LIVES CLEANING THEMSELVES…

What cat doesn’t love a self grooming session every three hours? It has been said that cats spend up to half of their entire existence grooming themselves and when they’re not grooming themselves you may find your cat will try to groom you to by licking you and is said to be done to show their affection toward you.

THEY DON’T DO CHANGE…

Cats do not like change in their routines at all and it can make them feel extremely unwell, refuse their food and actually make them physically sick if they are taken out of their routine.

LEFTY OR RIGHTY?

Yes, unbelievably, cats can be left pawed or right pawed. Something that makes this whole ‘dominant paw’ situation more interesting is that it can be commonly found as dependant on your cats gender. Male cats are more likely to be left pawed, and female cats their right.

CATS CAN BE SNEAKY!

When a cat wants to be fed he will do just about anything he needs to, to get fed. You will notice over affectionate behaviour when they are after food. Yes, that leg rubbing, heavy purring and affectionate nuzzling is not because they are pleased to see you, it’s because they are after a snack!

NOT TOO CLOSE

Due to their big beady eyes, cats are not able to focus on anything close up, however they make up for that in being extremely farsighted. Luckily, they have impeccable senses from their whiskers that aid their fuzzy close sight, meaning they don’t miss a thing.

CAT NAPS ARE A THING

Cats sleep for a lot of their lives. It is perfectly normal for a cat to average spending two-thirds of their lifetime sleeping, which is incredible. They cannot get enough of snoozing and we’re very envious of their sleepy schedule.

YOU DON’T HAVE CAT ALLERGIES

You may think you’re allergic to cats and their fur but really this is not the case at all. Humans can be allergic to something called cat dander, which is a hormone produced in a cat’s saliva that can cause allergic reactions in humans. Due to the intense grooming regime that cats undertake on themselves, their saliva is spread all over their fur and as a result, has caused the common misconception that it is the fur that causes the allergy.

NO SWEET TOOTH

Amazingly, a study undertaken over a decade ago suggests that cats are one of very few mammals that have no taste receptors at all for sweetness. Although, cats are carnivores, so their need and want for a sweet tooth is non existent.

IMPRESSIVE LEAPS

Cat’s can jump six times their own height, which makes them one of the most agile domesticated animals on the planet. It’s probably a good idea to hide away those breakables around your house if you have a particularly athletic cat.

BRAIN BOX

Cats are highly intelligent animals, in fact, amongst some of the smartest animals on the planet. Structurally, they share 90% the same as a human brain, although cats generally can’t be bothered to assert their intelligence, and would rather have a nap instead – relatable.
